I wanted to upload some images to an on-line forum. They have to be jpeg and smaller than 78Kb. I was able to use LZ to create these images. I used convert, selected jpeg, fit within 1024x1024 and 70% quality. These are not images you would want to print, but it worked.

I tried changing 300 ppi to 50 but there was no difference in image size. I seem to recall this setting was ignored in the past. Apparently it is still ignored. I have scanner software that does allow you to set ppi and it is important for desired image size. There is probably a trade-off between ppi and quality setting, but I can't explore that with LZ.

As I recall, from the video featuring Fabio and Uwe Steinmueller that was linked from the old LZ web site, Fabio at one point suggested that, in the near future about 5 years away, the manufacturers would supply cameras that performed, or allowed users to perform, many of the basic image editing activities ( and a few less basic ones) in camera.

We have, so far, seen features that can be used to relight an image to some extent as the shot is taken and a few cameras are appearing with inbuilt HDR capability or sorts.

Now we have the just announced Canon 60D with, as I read it, internal RAW editing and subsequent output of the edited filesas jpgs as well as the exisiting concept of picture styles for its jpg images.

From memory since the video was produced approximately 5 years have passed so it's happening pretty much as Fabio predicted.

I thought that interesting and worth mentioning here.

Does anyone have any further thoughts about the way things are likely to progress?

Might we see upmarket cameras accepting 'apps' in the same way that phones can? Will the phones make the lower order cameras obsolete? I've seen some shots taken on ( a few different) mobile phones where the image quality - certainly for electronic sharing - seemed to be nothing short of excellent even without the attention of an editor.

I sent the following suggestion to support.

For some time I think about an idea... a kind of dream.

I am doing some HDR but am often disappointed about the poor control I have on the tone mapping process. It is not a matter of having more sliders to pull and push, but of getting a program, which does not preempt too much on what I want to realize.

- In most tone mapping algorithm, the user is forced to start with an image, which is already tone mapped, so the only thing he can do is to tune some variables to get better results. To illustrate this, open three bracketed images in Photomatix. The first image shown is excessively contrasted, demonstrating in a kind that the image covers a range, which does not fit into screen/print; then select the tab Tone mapping, and you get a readily mapped image. There is no way to move the sliders to obtain the initial image (which would be the case if the user had full control on the mapping process).

- The definition of the zones in the picture, which will be compressed together and within which the local contrast will be enhanced is automatic. This automatism does not take neither image content nor image scale into account - you will not map a 70 Mp pano the same way as a 10 Mb single picture.

What I need: a program which allows me to control thoroughly the degree of compression of the whole range and to enhance local contrast selectively, letting ME select the zone of the image and the kind of contrast enhancement.

The tools in Lightzone come pretty close to these requirements, if I refer to the Zonemapper (with the corrections I already proposed) and the local contrast elements in the Relight tool. It includes even some semi-automatic tone mapping with the Relight tool V4. The Regions and the color tab in the tools is what I need to make selections according to the content So what I lack in the first place is a capability of reading EXR or HDR files.

I suppose it is not such simple to introduce that. Computations should be made in 32bit with floating decimal, the histogram tool should eventually be adapted to show what's outside the tiff-range (HDR-Exposure has it).

The scope of such an extension of Lightzone should not be to be capable of mastering ranges of 25 EV's. On the contrary, it would be sensible to restrict the usability of those functions to 14-16 EV's but to give full control on the mapping. 16 EV is about what you get with today's best cameras, three bracketed images with a 2 EV bracketing step. This limit would probably cover most of the usual demands for tone mapping. A higher dynamic ranges surpasses anyway the possibilities of eye and brain in any given setting.

For some additional considerations on the 'usability' of HDR, take a look at the following contribution: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/forums/thread5235.htm.

Hmm... I will be patient until version 5 comes out...
